Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions (AIEES) is the lead agency for energy and environmental research in Alberta. Energy and Environment Solutions brings together decision makers from government, industry and research and technology organizations to implement strategies and innovations in order to preserve and enhance Alberta's economic, environmental and social well being.
Alberta is world-renowned for its wealth of natural resources and its proud history of energy pioneers and innovators. To continue this legacy into the future, the challenge will lie in harmonizing energy development with environmental protection and social responsibility. Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions, the successor of the Alberta Energy Research Institute (AERI) and the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA), believes that this can only be done through research and development along the entire innovation chain, coupled with progressive policy.
As the lead agency for energy and environmental research and innovation in Alberta, Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions is focused on the next twenty years of energy and environmental innovation. Technology development is needed to address the challenges of cleaner and more efficient production, management of CO2 and water, and the development of renewable and emerging energy sources. Nanotechnology, advanced materials and biological systems are destined to become key technology platforms to achieve breakthroughs in carbon capture and storage, gasification, value-added production and emerging energy.
Our role is to champion strategic approaches for acquiring, advancing and integrating the knowledge required to make Alberta a global energy leader while contributing to the development of cleaner energy and greener communities. By supporting energy and environment collaboration along the entire innovation chain, Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions brings focus to energy and environment research, and bridges the gap between turning ideas into solutions for the energy and environmental sectors. We work closely with Alberta Energy, Alberta Environment and Alberta Finance and Enterprise to strengthen and support Alberta's richest natural resources: energy, environment and innovation.
Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions will focus on three strategic areas: energy technologies, environmental technologies and renewable and emerging resources. Linking technology to inform policy and regulation will be a major thrust for Energy and Environment Solutions.
