History

Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions is the evolution of Alberta's proud history of investment in energy and environmental research and development.

As one of four dynamic new corporations within Alberta's provincially funded research and innovation system, Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions was officially launched on January 1, 2010. The successor of the Alberta Energy Research Institute (AERI) and the Alberta Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority (AOSTRA), Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions evolved from over 35 years of provincial government experience in managing investments in energy research and development.

Research and technology development have long been vital to unlocking Alberta's oil and gas resources and the engineering marvel known as the oil sands. As a result of this history of investment in energy technology and research, our energy sector has had a positive impact on every Canadian by creating wealth and jobs, and by providing vital energy supplies. Today, technology development is focused on the challenges of cleaner more efficient production, management of CO2 and water, and the development of renewable and emerging energy sources. As the lead agency for energy and environmental research and innovation in Alberta, Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions brings together decision makers from government, industry and research and technology organizations to implement the strategies and innovations for next twenty years of energy and environmental innovation.
