- Another first. Sleep apnea discovery
Dr. John Remmers, a global leader in sleep physiology and sleep medicine, was the first to demonstrate that sleep apnea, a condition in which a person stops breathing periodically during sleep, is due to an anatomical narrowing of the pharynx. Dr. Remmers produced CPAP and the SnortSat sleep recorder.
- Improved ‘senses’ could mean thousands more barrels of bitumen a day.
Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures Sensors Engineering specialists have partnered with a series of oil sands processing operators over the past decade to create a series of sensors, MineSentry, collectively boost bitumen recovery from oil sands separation processes. Given the mass volume of bitumen, even a one percent improvement in recovery could mean tens of thousands of barrels per day of additional bitumen produced, and reduced environmental footprint.

Dr. Cy Frank is one of the leading figures in the field of bone and joint injury in the world and attributes his presence in Alberta to Alberta Innovates Health Solutions.

Diastolic heart failure is being studied in Alberta by both the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary. They are looking for 1,000 people who have different heart problems to be involved with a long-term research project as contributing participants to the research, not just subjects.

Biotechnology's a very important industry around the world. In the U.S. it's one of the major industries propelling the country to economic growth and we expect our research here at the University and the Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology to develop, and expand, and stimulate biotechnology in the province of Alberta.

The hepatoma cell line is unique because it allows the hepatitis C virus to be isolate while it infects the cells in the tissue culture hood. Therefore the virus can be studied due to its safe environment.

The hepatoma cells in the culture dish allow for the HCV infection and can then be used for future studies.

This instrument is used to load dye into the DNA samples. This loading dye allows the DNA samples to become visible as they migrate in the agarose gel.
