Another first. Sleep apnea discovery

Dr. John Remmers, a global leader in sleep physiology and sleep medicine, was the first to demonstrate that sleep apnea, a condition in which a person stops breathing periodically during sleep, is due to an anatomical narrowing of the pharynx. Dr. Remmers produced CPAP and the SnortSat sleep recorder.

Alberta researcher responsible for life–saving discovery for infant heart–transplant patients

Dr. Lori West is a renowned pediatric heart-transplant researcher who discovered infants can accept hearts from donors with different blood types. Dr. West discovered this was possible because infants have undeveloped immune responses. Her research focus for the future is on incompatible transplantation in adult patients. Dr. Lori West was recruited to the University of Alberta from Toronto, Canada's SickKids hospital thanks to Alberta Innovates Health Solutions funding.
